The incident began shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, when the sheriff’s office responded to the California Wawa in the 23100 block of Three Notch Road for a report of a stolen vehicle, which was located minutes later at a nearby hotel.
Investigators made contact with a suspect - later identified as Sater - who matched a description provided by witnesses. He fled the area on foot with a knife in the direction of the Wildewood shopping center, at which point deputies attempted to use less lethal means to subdue him.
Despite utilizing Taser devices and Sheriff's Office K9, Sater was able to continue fleeing, at which point he attempted to unsuccessfully carjack a second vehicle that was occupied.
Sater allegedly continued to flee through the shopping center and entered a separate vehicle that was running at which point he was shot by a deputy - later identified as Wesner - and airlifted to an area hospital for treatment.
Wesner, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was identified this week as the deputy who fired his weapon. He remains on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the shooting.
Sater will make an initial court appearance once he is released from the hospital. No date has been announced.
